San Fernando market, one of the five markets in Madrid's Centro district, has stood in one of Madrid's most characteristic urban spaces since1944, very near the old Pious Schools (today home to the National Distance Education University), the Corrala de Sombrerete and the Casino de la Reina park.
The surrounding area has undergone an ambitious urban rehabilitation programme since 1998. The façade of the building is its most original feature and gives it a unique character among the city's markets, surprising visitors when they discover a municipal market behind the magnificent entrance.
The traditional range of fresh produce that is typical of municipal markets is joined with a wide commercial offer, ranging from fashion stores to bookshops, as well as offering diverse cultural and leisure activities.
