Marina Mascarell directs a contemporary dance show inspired by the thoughts of Georges Bataille and his Eroticism, to explore desire as a transforming power. This show will be performed on 9, 10 and 11 April at the Centro Danza Matadero - CDM.
The show celebrates the three forms of eroticism put forward by Bataille (that of the body, the heart and the sacred) and takes them to the physical language of dance. On stage, a group of performers leave a final celebration, aware of the fragility of their existence and joined by a common attraction towards the abyss. The transgression, far from being a free provoking gesture becomes almost a ritual, with a poetic and spiritual dimension.
This is the first creation by Mascarell for the Danish Dance Theatre, developed in close collaboration with the company’s dancers. The proposal is rounded off with original music by Yamila Rios, whose rhythms strengthen the physical beating of the movement and the costumes by Nina Botkay highlight the production’s ceremonial nature.
The show was premiered in August 2024 at the Copenhagen Summer Dance Festival, in an outdoor venue in Ophelia Square, in front of the iconic Royal Playhouse in the heart of Copenhagen. In June 2025, the Danish Dance Theatre presented a new version adapted to its main venue, which is what is now being presented at the Centro Danza Matadero.
Born in Oliva (Valencia) in 1980, Marina Mascarell is a director and choreographer who studied Pedagogy for Dance at Rey Juan Carlos University and obtained a Master's Degree in Performing Arts from the same University. She won the BNG Bank Dance Prize 2015 and has created productions for ensembles such as the Nederlands Dans Theater I in The Hague, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Dance Forum Taipei, Junior Ballet of Geneva and Ballet de l'Opéra in Lyon. She has been the director of the Danish Dance Company since 2023.
