Tría Áurea

Tría Áurea is the name of a new visitor programme that includes joint admission to three of Madrid’s most exceptional Baroque monuments: the Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes, the Convent of the Comendadoras de Santiago and San Plácido Church.

Through this programme, you can visit three sacred buildings that are exemplary of the city’s Baroque period, such as the Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes, considered ‘the Sistine Chapel of Madrid’. This Baroque church, built between 1624 and 1633, was constructed as a chapel for the Hospital of San Antonio de los Portugueses, founded in 1606 by King Philip III. Throughout its history, it has undergone various restorations and interventions that have conserved and recovered this magnificent example of Madrid Baroque architecture.

The visit also includes the Church/Convent of the San Plácido Benedictine Nuns, home to the largest collection of artwork by Claudio Coello in the world. Designed by the architect Fray Lorenzo de San Nicolás, construction began in 1641 and was completed 20 years later. Inside, there is a Christ Recumbent figure by Gregorio Fernández, and at one time, it also housed Christ Crucified by Velázquez, painted specifically for this church. In 1943, it was declared a National Monument.

Finally, the programme includes a visit to the Convent of the Comendadoras de Santiago, founded by Phillip IV in 1650. Designed by the architects Manuel and José del Olmo, its most outstanding feature is undoubtedly its church, with a Greek cross plan and semicircular recesses, topped by a beautiful dome on pendentives and chamfered pillars in the centre.

The audio guided tours are available in Spanish, English and French at different times from Tuesday to Sunday.
