The La Veronal company will present a choreographic reinterpretation of the poetic and dark universe of Mercè Rodoreda, one of the most important writers in Catalonian literature, in Nave 11 at the Centro Danza Matadero from Thursdays to Sundays between 15 and 25 January. The production uses strobe lights.
Following its acclaimed première at the Venice Biennial and its run in Barcelona, where all twelve performances sold out, La Veronal will present a reinterpretation of Mercè Rodoreda's famous novel of the same name, with original music by Maria Arnal. It is an unfinished book, which was published in 1986 after the author's death. The main character is a teenager living in a cruel society, for whom death becomes a form of personal liberation.
Directed by Marcos Morau, the play builds a visual and physical fantasy in which bodies, gestures and images are turned into poetic material. Rodoreda wrote a radically vital novel that is also fiercely irreligious. Morau creates a show that celebrates the power of nature and denounces the moral deafness of mankind, which is constantly caught between its violence and its desire for survival. The result is a contemporary allegory about the ravages of modernity and daily fascism, told through a dance that breathes, collapses and is reborn like a living organism.
La Veronal is a company founded in 2005 by Marcos Morau (National Dance Award 2013) and is made up of a group of artists from the fields of modern dance, film, theatre, literature and photography. It is committed to an artistic language between abstraction and narration with the aim of establishing culturally diverse spaces. Pieces, such as Sonoma, Siena, Pasionaria or Voronia stand out.
