Cathay Pacific Airways<\/a> launched a new direct route between Madrid and Hong Kong on 2 June, offering four flights a week.<\/p>\n

A Boeing B777-300ER is used for the flight, which operates out of the Spanish capital on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our objectives is to turn this airport into a very efficient hub for the company, as it connects Asia-Pacific with Latin America\u201d, said Kinto Chan, the airline\u2019s Head of International Affairs, during the direct flight inaugural ceremony.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Infrastructure Minister Ana Pastor said that the new flight connection with Asia will help diversify the role of Madrid\u2019s airport as a distribution hub; it is currently very focused on the Latin American market. She also called the airport \u201cEurope\u2019s fastest-growing hub\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Minister views increasing the number of connections with China as a matter of great importance. As she reminded the audience, over 600 Spanish companies have a presence in the country, not to mention the growing Chinese interest in investing in Spain. In the third quarter of 2014, this investment was calculated at 290 million euros, according to data provided by Pastor.<\/p>\n

Cathay Pacific\u2019s Head of International Affairs expressed his confidence in the success of the new route, although he did not provide any data on the number of passengers expected for the first year. The company expects the flight to be used by business as well as leisure travellers, and he stressed that \u201cwe want the Spanish people to enjoy China\u2019s charm and be able to discover other destinations in Asia as well\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to data from Aena, the new route is expected to carry approximately 113,000 passengers per year (return flights) and translate into the creation of 300 jobs.<\/p>\n

The same source reported that the Adolfo Su\u00e1rez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded 4,291,978 passengers in May, a 7.3% increase with respect to the same month in 2015. Of these passengers, 4,287,220 were on commercial flights, with 1,222,349 travelling on flights either departing from Spain or with Spain as their final destination (+12%) and 3,064,871 travelling on international flights (+5.6%). As for the number of flights, in May the Madrid airport recorded 33,053, up 3% from the same month in the previous year. Of the commercial flights (32,964), 11,250 were domestic air traffic, a 2.2% increase, and 21,714 were international traffic, up 3.2% from the same period in 2015.<\/p>\n

Of the commercial passengers (19,173,048), 13,739,540 were travellers on international flights, 8.4% more than in the first five months of last year, and 5,433,508 were travellers on domestic flights, a 10.8% increase. In terms of numbers of flights, between January and May 2016 there were a total of 151,004 aircraft movements, representing an increase of 4.2% with respect to the same months in 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
